Namecheap provides a number of services but their core product is domain registration services. That is a fancy way of saying that they sell website names. If you’ve looked into starting your own website, you may have come across them in a google search along with a number of other providers like GoDaddy, Blue Host, and WpEngine. I decided to go with Namecheap when I first started my website and I’ve been a happy customer so far.

Cheap and Easy to Understand

Namecheap’s website is really easy to understand and use which is one of the reasons I really like using them. They have a search bar right at their home page where you can start searching domains for availability without an account. If the domain isn’t available as a .com, you’ll get a number of suggestions with different TLDs (.org, .co, etc) or similar names.

Domain names for just 88 cents!

Once you find a domain you like, you add the domain to your shopping cart and checkout like any other site. The domain will by default auto-renew after the original purchase duration is reached which in most cases is a good thing.

The last thing you want is someone coming in and buying your domain from under you and trying to charge an arm and a leg to sell it back.

One of the great things about Namecheap is that you get their WhoIsGuard service by default when you purchase domains from them. ICANN, the organization who regulates domains on the internet, requires registrar’s (Companies that sell domains) to provide contact details for each domain they register. This information is added to the WhoIs database and can be accessed by anyone very easily. This is fine for some organizations but not so great for individuals looking to do a blog or something of that nature.

If you we’re using another domain registrar, your information like your name, email address, and home address would be made publicly accessible to anyone on the internet for that domain. However, Namecheap’s WhoIsGuard service protects you by providing the WhoIsGuard contact details in-place of your personal information.

You can find out additional details on WhoIsGuard using our affiliate link to Namecheap’s website.

After You Buy Your Domain

You’ll need to find somewhere to host your website. You can host your site yourself at a relatively low cost by hosting your own wordpress server on a public cloud provider like Vultr, but there is a learning curve and you’ll be responsible for managing a server and securing it.

If that sounds too much for you, then I’d recommend you look at a managed wordpress provider. Namecheap can provide this for you and make it easy to manage your site. However, there are other providers like Bluehost, GoDaddy, and WPengine that can offer similar services. Just be careful when you sign up. It’s cheaper to do a long term contract but you’ll be stuck with them if the service is sub-par. I’d recommend going month to month until you feel comfortable.

So once you’ve figured out where you’ll host your site, you can use Namecheap’s free DNS services to setup the proper DNS records. You’ll either delegate the domain through NS records to another DNS provider or point the domain directly at the server that you setup or is provided to you by your service provider using an A record or a CNAME record. There are plenty of articles out there that can make this easier and some really good ones on Namecheap’s blog if your not sure what I’m talking about. This is something that you’ll rarely have to change so you don’t need to memorize how to do it.

Other Great Namecheap Services

Namecheap offers a ton of great services outside of domain registration services that can benefit individuals and small organizations. This includes free DNS hosting, low price managed hosting, easy wordpress hosting, low cost business cards, VPN, private email hosting, static site generators, and a free logo creator. I personally enjoyed using their logo maker. I found it really easy to use and it makes some really nice logos.

We really like Namecheap and have found them to be reliable and provide services at a reasonable price. Go check them out using our affiliate link and see what they have to offer!
